Hitching Your Trailer

Step 1: Position the Trailer and Vehicle

  • Ensure the tow vehicle and trailer are aligned in a straight line for an easy connection.

Step 2: Adjust the Trailer Height

  • Use the trailer jack to raise or lower the coupler so it clears the ball hitch.

Step 3: Align the Ball and Coupler

  • If needed, carefully pull the trailer forward or back up the vehicle until the hitch is directly below the coupler.

Step 4: Lower the Coupler onto the Ball

  • Engage the vehicle’s emergency brake.
  • Use the jack to lower the coupler until it rests securely on the ball hitch.

Step 5: Secure the Coupler

  • Engage the latch and insert the safety pin through the coupler to lock it in place.
  • Store the jack wheel in the front tub.

Step 6: Attach the Safety Chains

  • Attach the safety chains to the tow vehicle, crisscrossing them underneath the coupler to prevent the trailer from hitting the ground if disconnected.
  • Ensure the chains are not twisted. If too long, use a quick link to adjust their length.

Step 7: Secure the Emergency Breakaway Cable

  • Attach the breakaway cable directly to the tow vehicle using a carabiner or clip.
  • Do not loop the breakaway cable onto the chains.
  • This cable will engage the emergency brakes if the trailer detaches.

Step 8: Connect the Seven-Way Plug

  • Insert the seven-way pin connector into the tow vehicle.
  • Check that all trailer lights and signals are functioning properly.

Step 9: Check Trailer Level and Battery

  • Ensure the trailer is as level as possible. If needed, use a rise or drop receiver.
  • Make sure the battery disconnect switch is in the green (on) position to power emergency brakes.
