Dewinterizing your Haven 220 is an essential step in preparing your RV for camping season. This process removes RV antifreeze from the plumbing system and sanitizes your freshwater system to ensure safe, clean water for your travels.
Follow the steps below to properly dewinterize your unit.
Overview of the Process Dewinterizing includes three main stages:
- Drain all remaining RV antifreeze
- Sanitize the system using a bleach solution
- Flush thoroughly with fresh water
Step 1: Drain the System
Begin by removing any remaining RV antifreeze from the plumbing system.
- Open the gray tank valve and allow it to fully drain. Close the valve once empty.
- Open the hot and cold low-point drains to empty the water lines.
- Open the freshwater tank drain and allow it to completely drain.
- Ensure all water and antifreeze have drained before moving to the next step.
Step 2: Sanitize the Fresh Water System
Sanitizing your system eliminates bacteria and ensures safe water use.
- Prepare the Nautilus Panel by attaching a short hose and setting it to sanitize mode.
- Mix the sanitizing solution.
- Prepare a bleach solution at your preferred strength.
- A commonly recommended ratio from RV industry experts such as Go RVing is: ¼ cup of household bleach per 15 gallons of water
- At this ratio, allow the solution to sit in the system for 12 hours for effective sanitization.
- A stronger solution may be flushed through immediately, but proper dilution and contact time are recommended for best results
- Siphon the Solution into the System
- Place the free end of your hose into the sanitizing solution.
- Turn on the water pump to siphon the solution into the system.
- Tip: Place all bleach concentrate into one sanitizing container, then switch the Nautilus panel to Power Fill Mode to speed up filling the freshwater tank.
- Monitor your tank levels carefully to avoid overfilling.
- Once the freshwater tank is full, set the Nautilus panel to Dry Camping Mode.
Step 3: Circulate the Sanitizing Solution
Run the bleach solution through all faucets and fixtures, including:
- Kitchen sink
- Bathroom sink
- Interior shower
- Outdoor shower
Be sure to run both hot and cold lines at each fixture. Allow the solution to sit in the system for the recommended sanitizing time (12 hours if using the standard dilution ratio).
Step 4: Drain the System Again
After sanitizing is complete:
- Open the hot and cold low-point drains.
- Drain the gray tank.
- Drain the freshwater tank.
- Drain the Hot Water Tank (Alde System). To drain the hot water tank:
- Locate the Alde relief valves under the dinette bench.
- Remove the cushions.
- Remove the screws securing the panel cover.
- Open the relief valves and allow the tank to fully drain.
- Once all components have drained completely, close all valves and drains.
Step 5: Flush with Fresh Water
Now it’s time to remove the bleach solution from the system.
- Set the Nautilus panel to Power Fill Mode and refill the freshwater tank with clean water.
- Switch to Dry Camping Mode.
- Turn on the water pump.
- Run fresh water through all faucets and fixtures (both hot and cold lines).
- You may need to refill and flush the system multiple times to eliminate any residual bleach smell or taste.
Step 6: Final Drain After Flushing
Drain the system one final time and turn off the water pump.
